What is Gum disease and its types ?

Gum disease

Gum disease is an infection of the gums, usually caused by bacterial contamination. It can become a serious infection known as periodontitis. Gingivitis and periodontitis are common causes of tooth loss in adults. Gum disease is caused by plaque, the sticky clingy of bacteria that is continually forming on your teeth.

Gingivitis
It is the mildest form of periodontal disease. It causes the gums to become swollen, red and bleed easily. There is no discomfort at this stage. It is often caused by inadequate oral hygiene. Gingivitis is reversible with professional treatment. Some factors that may contribute to gingivitis problem include smoking, aging, diabetes, genetic predisposition, systemic diseases.

Periodontitis
It is a serious gum infection that harms the soft tissue and destroys
the bone that supports your teeth. Periodontitis can make teeth
loosen. Toxins produced by the bacteria in the plaque irritate the
gums.

Types of Periodontitis
Chronic periodontitis is the most common form, affecting mostly adults,
though kids can be affected, as well. It can occur at any age. Progression of attachment loss usually occurs slowly, but times of quick movement occur.

Necrotizing periodontal disease is characterized by the death of gingival tissues and alveolar. This type generally occurs in people with a suppressed
immune system like HIV infection, malnutrition, and immunosuppression.

Systemic diseases- It often starts at a young age. Systemic conditions for example heart disease, respiratory disease, and diabetes are related to these types of
periodontitis.
