Sleep Apnea Problem |
Sleep
apnea is a chronic condition that causes people to prevent breathing
at different times throughout their sleep cycles. During an apnea
event, people tend to either clench their jaw or open their mouth to
gasp for air. There are the main types:
Obstructive sleep apnea- The more common form that occurs when throat muscles relax during the interruptions to breathing, called apneas, the airway's soft tissue collapses. This collapse prevents oxygen from passing through the airway and arriving in the lungs.
Central sleep apnea- During central sleep apnea, the brain does not sending messages to the body to breathe during sleep. No physical disruption to the airway takes place. But the body responds as if an interruption occurs.
Complex sleep apnea syndrome- It is also referred to as treatment-emergent central apnea. It occurs when someone has both obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea.
All types of sleep apnea are disruptive to sleep patterns. People with untreated sleep apnea typically awaken feeling tired and lethargic. Left untreated, apnea can have a big impact on short- and long-term mental and physical health.
